The past few days have left memories of pain and suffering for many of the people of Ferguson, Missouri as well as others around the world. Regardless of what you feel was just or unjust in the Grand Jury’s decision, nothing will change the devastation enacted upon many innocent residents in this small town.

All civilized communities are bound to uphold the law which they have agreed to and in doing so will contain violence and unlawful actions. These laws are in place to protect the innocent and punish the perpetrators of unlawful actions. But, the devastation, suffering and financial loss depicted this week brings to question- “How uncivilized have we become”?

When buildings and property are destroyed because of people’s dissatisfaction to a legal decision, one must come to the conclusion that man is responsible to his community and most choose to follow legal actions to solve community issues. Unfortunately others take it upon themselves to live outside our established rules of civilized societies and, as we have viewed on our news broadcasts this week, living outside the law has its consequences. It is also unfortunate these consequences are shared by all, even the innocent.

Nothing will bring back property which has been destroyed nor will any of us be able to wipe the images from our memory of the uncivilized behavior we have just witnessed. All we can do is pray for the innocent and ask forgiveness for our country as we continue to lose control of this once great nation.

This morning I was reminded of the lyrics of a well-known song which seems to fit our thoughts for those who sustained losses this week in Ferguson.

When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there’s a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
