Instrumentation- Solo/Duet/Trio/Quartet or Melody and three Decants with Organ
Composer- arr.Chidester
Length- Depends on number of verses used
Difficulty- E
Range – Easy
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 2

I have played a lot of Easter Services and one thing is usually true; most organists don’t know what to do with the brass players unless the arrangement has been written out. Most often we hear this, “I want you to play along on the hymns”. That doesn’t give you much to work on for in order to play along with the hymns, you will have to transpose the top line of the organ part. Although this is expected of trumpet players, it sometimes is a problem with younger players. Then we might be asked to play an obbligato part which will stop most players. Most Easters also include one, two and sometimes three trumpet players who most often have to sit around doing nothing or doubling on the first part.

The days of unorganized confusion in the choir loft are finally over.

This arrangement includes the following possibilities-

1. Transposed hymn melody for trumpet solo.
2. Transposed parts for a trumpet duet/ trio and/or quartet.
3. Transposed melody for one trumpet and choice of three additional descants.

Start collecting these descant arrangements and be a hero to every organist you run into.

Length- 1:53
Difficulty- VE
Range – Low G to Eb (top space)
Endurance- 1
Finger technique- 1
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 1+

Great fun for everyone! The younger players will find this one interesting and fun for the parts are as simple as I can write. Any fingering or notes that might be a problem have alternate notes included for easier playing. Trumpet 1 and 2 share the melody and all parts have ample time to get the mouthpiece off the face. Pay close attention to the doted eighths and the even eighths for better rhythm.

Yankee Doodle Variations for Trumpet Trio

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet trio
Composer- Anglo-American Song/arr.Chidester
Length- 3:42
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to A just above staff
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 2

I am very pleased with the way this tune came out. For only three trumpets, it sounds very full. I love Theme and Variations and this one worked very well. The counter melody at the beginning was just one of those lucky moments and the Chorale in the middle just seemed natural for this piece. I hope you like it and buy it! The ending can be performed in two ways. You can do the fade or a shorter ending has been indicated. Each performer has a chance at the melody at some time in the number.

This is a number stolen directly from the old fiddle player’s library. Old-time music is known for its simple melodies and repeated structure. This is a wonderful number to give your students when they are learning to articulate evenly.

We are making this month’s free trumpet ensemble arrangement available and all I ask is for you to visit our Face Book Page at…

and register an “I LIKE”. If we have enough responses to this request, we will continue our monthly free arrangements.

Gavotte in G Major

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet trio
Composer- Handel/ highly edited by Chidester
Length- 2:30
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to D just above staff
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 2

If you are looking for a typical Gavotte, this isn’t it.

If you are looking for a beautiful, slow, smooth trio with more passion than a soap opera, this is the one. I think this has much more appeal at this tempo than what Handel first had in mind. If your second part player does not have a good high D, just drop it down an octave on beat three of measure 29 and move on. This is a very unusual handling of this well known dance piece and should be well received by your listeners.

Endurance- 3+
Finger technique- 3+
Counting ability- 3+
Ensemble difficulty- 3+

No, I didn’t get this one on the first take! I really had to spend some time on this one but it was worth it. The second and third cornet parts are easy and I think add a lot to the performance. I am planning on having our group perform this on a recital this next Fall, if I can get a volunteer to play the solo part. I love the cornet and plan to add as many arrangements as I can for the art and interest in cornet playing and literature need to be improved. The cornet is in no way a beginner’s instrument and the more we can promote it, the better people will understand its value. Please note the change in price. This took an unbelievable amount of effort to put together. The piano score is “16 pages” alone.

Theater Cat & Memory from Cats- Solo/Duet/Trio for any Treble Clef Instruments

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Instrumentation- Solo/Duet/Trio
Composer- Webber/arr.Chidester
Length- 4:14
Difficulty- E
Range – Low G to F# top line
Endurance- 1+
Finger technique- 1
Counting ability- 1
Ensemble difficulty- 1

Includes complete parts for Solo/Duet/Trio
-Theater Cat-
-Memory-

I have had several requests for show tunes but I wanted to do something different and unique which could be used by young students and would also be handy for band directors needing a versatile ensemble arrangement. This is written to be used as a solo, a duet or a trio for any treble clef instruments. You can use the same instruments as in the case of the recording with three trumpets or you could also use clarinets, saxophones, violins, flutes, etc. You could even mix and match instruments i.e. trumpet and two tenor saxophones.

The solo is a stand alone solo. The duet switches parts between the two players to save chops and give both players a chance to shine. The third part can be added to give the group a bigger sound and involve an additional player. For teachers who want something fun to play in lessons, this concept will work well for no matter how many players you have in the band room, you will be able to put something together at any time. For the younger player, you will be able to call up your friends to play something interesting and recognizable together.
