Everyone does this with an opening choral followed by a rock section and finally ends as a slow hymn and this is no exception. The reason everyone does it this way is because it works. The only difference is this is written for a trumpet choir. This was scored for 3 trumpets, 2 Cornets, and 3 Flugels which works well for the first Cornet can be used as a fourth trumpet and the second Cornet can be used as a lead Flugel horn or they can be used together as a Cornet section. It can be played by eight Bb trumpets also.

Sometimes you arrange something which sounds good and yet is extremely easy to play. That was the case for this unusual setting of an old favorite. The 1st trumpet and 1st Cornet will require players, but the other parts are extremely easy with ample time to rest. It has the feeling of a Renaissance courtly dance throughout. The counter melody, if I may say, is very well written. It was one of those arrangements that literally wrote it’s self. Even before I heard the melody with the counter melody, I knew it was going to fit.
This was scored for 3 trumpets, 3 Cornets, and 2 Flugels with optional Bb Pic. and Eb Cornet parts but could be performed by all trumpets just as well.

Composer- Bizet/arr.Chidester
Length- 3:01
Difficulty- M+
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2-3

This is a wonderful piece and is well suited to the trumpet ensemble. The melody switches from the first part to the second and lends itself to easy playing. The hardest part in the arrangement is the third trumpet part for it has constant playing. The third parts range is not difficult but it does go on through the whole number. Everyone else has a chance to take short breaks. The fifth and sixth parts were recorded with two flugel horns but would work equally well with six trumpets.

Free Trumpet Sheet Music- Fanfare for Nine Trumpets

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet nonet
Composer- Chidester
Length- 1:21
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty-2+

This was written for an opening of a program and uses three trumpet sections to surround the audience. Trumpets 1-3 are placed front, center stage, trumpets 4-6 are positioned on the audiences’ left and trumpets 7-9 are positioned to the right of the audience. The locations enhance the independent parts of each section for the best effect. Our recording used flugels on parts 7-9 but trumpets will work just as well. Each part is easy and more time will be required to get people in their places than for rehearsing the music.

Why should the strings have all the fun on this number? The two solo parts are made much easier by lowering the key from the original. Nothing has been lost due to the change of key. The third trumpet has a lot to do but a good high school student could get it done. I have included only the first and second movements in this offering because of the added work involved in the transcription and the extra number of pages in each part and score. The third movement will follow. As soon as I get my energy back!

You might wonder why I have listed so many #3’s in the areas above. This piece is not difficult unless you get lost. If that happens, it’s all over. With so many contrapuntal lines going on, you would have a very difficult time getting back in again. With that said, I think that this is a beautiful study in counterpoint.
