This is another request from a new friend who wanted this done. I didn’t know the piece but after listening to it for a few days, I decided to see just where it wanted to go. The choral section in the middle makes a good contrast to the other sections and showcases the horns alone. The solo is written out and all of the high notes have optional notes. The counter melody at the end came to me one day and I think it is the best part of the chart. The interaction of the trumpets, bass and guitar is a wonderful combination. I keep playing this around my house all day long.

By request! This is not what I usually arrange but a good friend wanted to know if I could do it…… I do love a challenge. I decided on a trumpet section, a cornet section and a flugel horn section to utilize the distinct timbre of the different instruments and staging them as I did on the recording works well: flugels in front and trumpets and cornets on each side facing each other. Each player has a solo and those with the sixteenth notes had better practice their parts for I DID NOT RECORD THIS ONE ON THE FIRST TAKE. The fingering is tough and the tempo, even though it is slower (mm 120) than the original (mm 174!) it will be challenging to even the better college groups. Do not expect to sight read this one on the stand. Half of the transcription was taken from a Midi file and the other half was written to match the original. The MP3 example has been shortened for the post. If you want to download the first page of the 1st trumpet part, it makes great material to practice your fast modal scales.

Difficulty- M
Range – Low F# to A just above staff
Endurance- 2

By request! This will be a great crowd pleaser for everyone likes the tune. It can be played as a stand alone quartet, quintet or sextet. Trumpets 5 and 6 can be played by regular Bb trumpets, flugels or bass trumpets. Some of the wide skips have alternate notes for easier playing. Most of the number is a trumpet 1 feature but others have a shot at the melody from time to time.

Allegro from Balleto Quarto (Op.1) for Trumpet Quintet

Composer- Gabrieli/arr.Chidester
Length- 1:50
Difficulty- D
Range – Low F# to high C
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 3
Counting ability- 3
Ensemble difficulty- 3

This started out as a woodwind trio and by adding two more players and moving the parts around, it worked very well for a trumpet quintet. Each part has ample time to rest and it has a much fuller sound than just a trio.

Everyone does this with an opening choral followed by a rock section and finally ends as a slow hymn and this is no exception. The reason everyone does it this way is because it works. The only difference is this is written for a trumpet choir. This was scored for 3 trumpets, 2 Cornets, and 3 Flugels which works well for the first Cornet can be used as a fourth trumpet and the second Cornet can be used as a lead Flugel horn or they can be used together as a Cornet section. It can be played by eight Bb trumpets also.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen- Trumpet Octet

Sometimes you arrange something which sounds good and yet is extremely easy to play. That was the case for this unusual setting of an old favorite. The 1st trumpet and 1st Cornet will require players, but the other parts are extremely easy with ample time to rest. It has the feeling of a Renaissance courtly dance throughout. The counter melody, if I may say, is very well written. It was one of those arrangements that literally wrote it’s self. Even before I heard the melody with the counter melody, I knew it was going to fit.
This was scored for 3 trumpets, 3 Cornets, and 2 Flugels with optional Bb Pic. and Eb Cornet parts but could be performed by all trumpets just as well.

Habanera From Carmen

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet sextet
Composer- Bizet/arr.Chidester
Length- 3:01
Difficulty- M+
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2-3
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty-2+

This is a wonderful piece and is well suited to the trumpet ensemble. The melody switches from the first part to the second and lends itself to easy playing. The hardest part in the arrangement is the third trumpet part for it has constant playing. The third parts range is not difficult but it does go on through the whole number. Everyone else has a chance to take short breaks. The fifth and sixth parts were recorded with two flugel horns but would work equally well with six trumpets.

Free Trumpet Sheet Music- Fanfare for Nine Trumpets

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet nonet
Composer- Chidester
Length- 1:21
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty-2+

This was written for an opening of a program and uses three trumpet sections to surround the audience. Trumpets 1-3 are placed front, center stage, trumpets 4-6 are positioned on the audiences’ left and trumpets 7-9 are positioned to the right of the audience. The locations enhance the independent parts of each section for the best effect. Our recording used flugels on parts 7-9 but trumpets will work just as well. Each part is easy and more time will be required to get people in their places than for rehearsing the music.
