By request! This is not what I usually arrange but a good friend wanted to know if I could do it…… I do love a challenge. I decided on a trumpet section, a cornet section and a flugel horn section to utilize the distinct timbre of the different instruments and staging them as I did on the recording works well: flugels in front and trumpets and cornets on each side facing each other. Each player has a solo and those with the sixteenth notes had better practice their parts for I DID NOT RECORD THIS ONE ON THE FIRST TAKE. The fingering is tough and the tempo, even though it is slower (mm 120) than the original (mm 174!) it will be challenging to even the better college groups. Do not expect to sight read this one on the stand. Half of the transcription was taken from a Midi file and the other half was written to match the original. The MP3 example has been shortened for the post. If you want to download the first page of the 1st trumpet part, it makes great material to practice your fast modal scales.

My Birthday Wish to My Friends

My Birthday Wish to My Friends

I wanted to thank everyone who has sent me birthday wishes and to thank you, please accept this small token of my gratitude. For those who aren’t aware of my sordid background, I need to explain a reference in the lyric. I was held back in the fourth grade and for those of you who share this dark blot on their past, be assured that success does not depend on your earlier childhood; it has more to do with what happens after fourth grade. Accept your fate and carry on.

My Birthday wish to you- Thanks for the memory

Thanks to all and to all a good night!

Another request!

After return home from a Christmas party last night, I noticed a request on one of the trumpet bulletin boards asking for descants for “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” and “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”. Neither of these numbers is readily available so I arranged the requested descants this morning and after sending them to the original requester (living in Scotland) I checked my Email and found that a recent friend (living in Haiti) had recommended that the requester contact me. Is this what’s call International Good Will?

I love the Internet!

There are two descants for each of the hymns. In measure 32-33-34 of “Love Divine” the part goes a little high so I wrote a lower part. Both parts are on the recording so you could split the two decants between two players and play the high as well as the lower parts to make it sound like a duet. This is also true in measures 21-22-23.

All parts are written in Concert pitch.

Range – Low Bb to A just above staff

When faced with “five” times through a hymn, I like to use the tag team approach. Each player plays a short phrase and turns it over to someone else. I staged this as an antiphonal performance to break up the repetition. If you want to sound professional and use young players, this works very well.

I staged this as an antiphonal performance to break up the repetition. If you want to sound professional with your younger players, this works very well.It begins as solo antiphonal, then duet antiphonal, then more homophonic and the last time through reverts back to more traditional sound.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen- Trumpet Octet

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet Octet (with optional Bb Pic./ Eb Cornet parts)
Composer- arr.Chidester
Length- 2:33
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2-
Finger technique- 2-
Counting ability- 2-
Ensemble difficulty- 2-

Sometimes you arrange something which sounds good and yet is extremely easy to play. That was the case for this unusual setting of an old favorite. The 1st trumpet and 1st Cornet will require players, but the other parts are extremely easy with ample time to rest. It has the feeling of a Renaissance courtly dance throughout. The counter melody, if I may say, is very well written. It was one of those arrangements that literally wrote it’s self. Even before I heard the melody with the counter melody, I knew it was going to fit.
This was scored for 3 trumpets, 3 Cornets, and 2 Flugels with optional Bb Pic. and Eb Cornet parts but could be performed by all trumpets just as well.

Free Sheet Music- The Rose for Trumpet Quartet and Piano

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet quartet with piano
Composer- McBroom/arr.Chidester
Length- 2:18
Difficulty- VVE
Range – Low C to C third space (one octave)
Endurance- 1
Finger technique- 1
Counting ability- 1
Ensemble difficulty- 1

It doesn’t get any easier than this! Every note is within an octave (low C to third space C). Everyone has a short solo and ample rests. The key is in F, one flat. There is nothing faster than a slow eighth note. The piano is laying down steady pulses on every beat. The phrases are short so there is no problem with running out of air. And with all the simplification, it still sounds good. Even the piano part is easy. PLUS IT’S FREE!

They shall receive a glorious Kingdom

This is a wonderful number which sounds as “Up town Classical” as you can get. When I recorded this, I was amazed at how full and rich when you consider how many measures of rest there are for all of the players. This is a major piece and involves very little effort to play. This is usually the case when you are working with a true genius’s composition. All I can say is, you should treat yourself and/ or your students to this number. Editing was kept to a minimum and the only alterations I did was to sustain some notes where the text required multiple notes.
