This is another request from a new friend who wanted this done. I didn’t know the piece but after listening to it for a few days, I decided to see just where it wanted to go. The choral section in the middle makes a good contrast to the other sections and showcases the horns alone. The solo is written out and all of the high notes have optional notes. The counter melody at the end came to me one day and I think it is the best part of the chart. The interaction of the trumpets, bass and guitar is a wonderful combination. I keep playing this around my house all day long.

Instrumentation- Trumpet quartet
Composer- Jobin/arr.Chidester
Length- 2:38
Difficulty- M+
Range – Low F# to A just above staff
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2+

The parts were written to copy a bass and a guitar background and for that reason the parts are unusual and will require solid rhythmic reading. The contrast between the solo and the accompaniment is very interesting and unusual. Each player takes his/her turn at background and solo playing.

Range – Low F# to G just above the staff
Endurance- 2+
Finger technique- 3
Counting ability- 3
Ensemble difficulty- 3

I have had several requests for an arrangement for the more advanced players and Spain was the first thing to come to mind. The well known unison melody wll be challenging for even the above average players. Each player must count and be on top of the ensemble figures. There are many holes which might be filled by a bad counting issue. The trumpet solo in the recording begins several measures before the actual part indicates for I got so worked up in the recording; I decided that I wanted to join the fun. This could be a great number to invite a friend to sit in on the solos as I did. Please note change in price due to the added amount of work spent on this arrangement.

This will sir your Latin blood. There are several things going on in this number to generate some interest with this very old tune. I have used many cross rhythms which will require counting but add to the interest of the piece. None should get tired because of the included rests. I have inserted measures of silence for effect and a few interesting rhythmic effects.

Himno Nacional de México (National Anthem of Mexico)

Dificultad-E
Rango – Bajo G al espacio superior E
Resistencia-1
Dedo técnica-1.2
Contar la capacidad-1.2
Dificultad-1.2 Conjunto

Instrumentation-

When I first heard this Anthem, I loved it. It has so many things going for it. The only parts I changed were a couple rhythms in the smooth section and I slowed the original tempo down from 118 to 112 on the recording. I also heard this as being played on flugels but trumpets would work as well. I wish this was our National Anthem for both the melody and harmony are better composed. All of the parts are easy to play and the very limited range is refreshing.

I’m sure you have not heard an arrangement of this standard done like this before. The melody is extremely simple and the short counterpoint is very difficult with intervals of fourths and fifths running through it. The first key is easy but after the modulation you get into some difficult fingerings. Towards the end I have a strict cannon between two parts and short motives introduced in the other parts. The use of a cup mute at the beginning gives it a light and comical feel. This will require some rehearsals to get the feel of the piece. I would say for a serious program, it would be worth the time spent. Your best player should be on the first part.

Habanera From Carmen

Composer- Bizet/arr.Chidester
Length- 3:01
Difficulty- M+
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2-3
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty-2+

This is a wonderful piece and is well suited to the trumpet ensemble. The melody switches from the first part to the second and lends itself to easy playing. The hardest part in the arrangement is the third trumpet part for it has constant playing. The third parts range is not difficult but it does go on through the whole number. Everyone else has a chance to take short breaks. The fifth and sixth parts were recorded with two flugel horns but would work equally well with six trumpets.

This is one of the great classic Mancini arrangements. Each player has interesting parts and the trumpet solo is given to the third trumpet player. The solo is totally written out or can be done on the spot. The rhythmic interest is what made this such a great number.

This was one of the most enjoyable projects I have done for some time for when you are working with “great material”, the arrangement almost writes itself. The parts are much easier than you would think for the tempo does not get too fast for an average high school player. As with most of my charts, everyone has a chance at the “good stuff”. This will require some independent playing for everyone has their own part and most of the arrangement is contrapuntal in style. The opening can be played with four trumpets without any loss of richness.
