Another request!

After return home from a Christmas party last night, I noticed a request on one of the trumpet bulletin boards asking for descants for “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” and “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”. Neither of these numbers is readily available so I arranged the requested descants this morning and after sending them to the original requester (living in Scotland) I checked my Email and found that a recent friend (living in Haiti) had recommended that the requester contact me. Is this what’s call International Good Will?

I love the Internet!

There are two descants for each of the hymns. In measure 32-33-34 of “Love Divine” the part goes a little high so I wrote a lower part. Both parts are on the recording so you could split the two decants between two players and play the high as well as the lower parts to make it sound like a duet. This is also true in measures 21-22-23.

All parts are written in Concert pitch.

Patriotism is going strong in Branson all year long but especially at this time of the year. The Branson Trumpet Ensemble has been very busy and I wanted something a little different for Taps this year. This collection includes eight versions ranging from doubling to a little more creative. I hope this can be of use to you as it has been for us. And remember our Veterans for they gave more than we can every repay.

When faced with four times through a hymn, I like to use the “tag team” approach. Each player plays a short phrase and turns it over to someone else. I staged this as an antiphonal performance to break up the repetition. If you want to sound professional with your younger players, this works very well.It begins as solo antiphonal, then duet antiphonal, then more homophonic and the last time through reverts back to more traditional sound.

After you get used to the 5/4 time, this plays itself. The 3rd and 4th parts are mostly constant but in an easy register. This should be a great number for your younger players now that the movie has come out again.
The parts are for Bb trumpets and the score is written in concert pitch. If you would like to play this down a second, follow the score parts and the low F in the 4th trumpet part has been given alternate fingerings in order to play the low F. Be sure to pull the third slide out and use the included fingering.

If I were asked what redeeming qualities this arrangement possesses, I would be at a loss to come up with one. It might have been the smoke I ingested while warding off the flames which were trying to engulf my house during the wee hours of the morning last Thursday. I do think this number could be used to entertain the younger set and in order to perform this well, each player must count their own part. Who knows? Someone might have a program where this would work well. Who knows what lurks in the minds of men/women? You may find a use for this silly, little piece.

This is a number stolen directly from the old fiddle player’s library. Old-time music is known for its simple melodies and repeated structure. This is a wonderful number to give your students when they are learning to articulate evenly.

One of the greatest experiences I have had was playing for Bobby Vinton. The first time was in Waterloo, Iowa and I was able to play the last three seasons with him in Branson. I grew up dancing to his great voice when I was in high school and he sounds as good now as he did then.

Bobby is not only a great singer but also a very talented musician- playing sax, clarinet, trumpet, piano, drums and about anything else that makes a noise. He is also one of the most gifted song writers of our time. To you Bobby, thank you for the opportunity to play in your fine orchestra and to those who have enjoyed his music for so many years, here is a number I hope you will enjoy.
