This is a wonderful number which sounds as “Up town Classical” as you can get. When I recorded this, I was amazed at how full and rich when you consider how many measures of rest there are for all of the players. This is a major piece and involves very little effort to play. This is usually the case when you are working with a true genius’s composition. All I can say is, you should treat yourself and/ or your students to this number. Editing was kept to a minimum and the only alterations I did was to sustain some notes where the text required multiple notes.

I have always enjoyed this hymn and wanted to give it more of a concert setting rather than just a church hymn. The counter melody runs throughout and the main melody is shared by all of the players. I wanted to feature the different texture of the trumpets and flugels but this arrangement will work equally well for all the same horns. I included a short modulation in the middle to spice it up and then it returns to the original key. I especially like the ascending pattern and fermatta with the first trumpet on high C and the fourth part on a low C. This open voicing has a great effect. The running counter melody is contrasted with two fermattas for effect. I added one measure of silence for the same reason. Whether you are planning to perform this in church or on a recital stage, I’m sure your audience will enjoy it.

The Trumpet Overture from The Indian Queen written by Purcell is well known but was originally written for trumpet, Trombone and organ. I have rewritten the trombone part and add a few notes to make it more trumpet like. This would be a great recital number for any serious trumpet player. It has three sections and is a real crowd pleaser.

Someone requested a trumpet descant to be played with Ode To Joy so here it is. I would have had it posted sooner but this is my wife’s and my 47th anniversary and there are more important things in life than music! The request asked for one trumpet descant but I thought I would write it for two trumpets. If you only have one player, “read between the lines”.

With all of the disasters around the world and because of the individual suffering, I wanted to write something which might give someone encouragement, if only in music. The trio was selected to represent the three horrific events many have gone through recently- Japans tsunami, floods in the United States, and the terrible tornado in Joplin, Missouri.
I selected the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul” to represent the people who lost their lives on the Titanic. The opening figures were written to represent the swirling water and wind. From under the turmoil of this motif comes the beginning of the hymn and when it is fully stated, the turmoil of the wind and water resides to give the piece the calmness experienced after a tragedy. The piece begins low and soft and continues with an increase of both volume and range, moving ever closer towards contentment in ones soul.

This was a requested fanfare for this Easter. The requirements were- 16 measures long and something grand. I think this fits the request well. It starts with the easily recognized “Christ the Lord” melody and fits both the trumpet as well as the organ. The trumpet part has enough strength to be played alone if need. Of course everyone needs a trill that early in the morning.

This is not your usual Easter version. The first half of the arrangement features the trumpets and the organ servers a supportive roll. When the congregation is to sing, the organ leads and the trumpets play an “in and out” roll to the end. Each of the upper three players take turns at the melody and the fourth part is there for support. This arrangement can be performed equally well with three or four players. The modulation into the last verse is so strong that even the most tone deaf, tin eared singer in your church can understand. I wrote this version with the intent to give the congregation a mini concert before the hymn is to be sung and I feel that it works well. Give yourself a break this Easter and perform something new, not just what the organist has in the library. You and everyone in your church will be praising this arrangement Easter morning, as well as the real reason you are there.

This is the same hymn we have all played for years and have hated every one of those (9) tah, ta,ta,ta, tah’s. We have been asked to play this on a concert at the end of the month and I decided it was time to make it a little more interesting. The original was written for three trumpets and we needed four parts. I started the arrangement with the original trumpet parts and each of the later entrances got a little more elaborate. I did keep one measure that I liked from the original.

This is an easily recognized Aria from Handel and should have been written for trumpet in the first place. It fits the horn beautifully and would be a wonderful church or recital number. I have included both a Bb and C trumpet parts. Playing it on a D would be fantastic! After listening to the playback on this I need to apologize for too much vibrato but please realize, all of these examples are most often “first takes”.
