Instrumentation- Trumpet trio
Composer- Handel/ highly edited by Chidester
Length- 2:30
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to D just above staff
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 2

If you are looking for a typical Gavotte, this isn’t it.

If you are looking for a beautiful, slow, smooth trio with more passion than a soap opera, this is the one. I think this has much more appeal at this tempo than what Handel first had in mind. If your second part player does not have a good high D, just drop it down an octave on beat three of measure 29 and move on. This is a very unusual handling of this well known dance piece and should be well received by your listeners.

The people will tell of their wisdom

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet quartet/w Piano
Composer- Handel/trans.Chidester
Length- 1:40
Difficulty- M
Range – Low F# to G just above staff
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 2

If you are looking for a simple, still impressive fugue for your younger players, this will fill your need. The first trumpet part has most of the work but due to the length of the piece, most players will not burn out playing it. The range is easy and there are enough rests to help out. It begins with a slow choral and quickly starts the fugue in the second part. The ending is very impressive for the fugue ends in a strong homo-phonic section followed by the final slow choral. This would sound great on any recital or as a contest piece for it has everything in it for a first place finish.

All parts are doubled in the piano accompaniment which will give your players a little more confidence and because of the doubled parts, the trumpets can perform this without the piano. Parts include- Trumpet parts, piano part and score.

When the ear heard her

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet quartet/w Piano
Composer- Handel/trans.Chidester
Length- 3:06
Difficulty- E
Range – Low Bb to A just above staff
Endurance- 1
Finger technique- 1
Counting ability- 1
Ensemble difficulty- 2

This is another in my series of easy contest/ recital numbers from the Handel collection “The ways of Zion do mourn” which was written as a Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline. This was originally written for four voices but transcribes even better for four like instruments such as four trumpets. The Piano part is much more difficult than the trumpet parts. This would be an excellent number for a Middle School group. There is plenty of rests throughout.
The tempo is very flexible and traditionally is done at mm 64. I moved it up a little and it could easily be performed at a faster tempo.
I have recorded the first and second trumpets in the left channel and the third and fourth in the right to illustrate the antiphonal possibilities if performed on stage or in a church.

Parts included- Trumpets 1, 2, 3, 4, Piano alone and Piano score with trumpet parts.

She put on righteousness

Length- 2:05
Difficulty- M
Range – Low G to G just above staff
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2

Ensemble difficulty- 2

This would be a first place at contest for sure. If it is played well! Few composers are as gifted as Bach and Handel at writing counterpoint and I think this is a very fine example. Each player has great lines to play and the interplay of the four is wonderful. This would be a number to train your players to read independently and at the same time think in a cooperative ensemble manner. In other words, “you have to think it, plat it and fit it” into the fabric.
The range is not a problem as well as the endurance. Do yourself a favor and put this in your library, you will thank me. This number sounds very professional but can easily be performed by most high school groups. You may wish to change the minor chord at the end to a major by raising the Bb to a B. This would program better and leave the judge with a more positive view of your group. If you do choose to alter the last chord, be sure to take it up with Handel before hand.

Fugue in Eb

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet quartet
Composer- Chidester
Length- 2:33
Difficulty- M
Range – Low F (alternate fingerings given) to high C
Endurance- 2
Finger technique- 2
Counting ability- 2
Ensemble difficulty- 2

I enjoy writing fugues for I find them very complicated and challenging. This one varies slightly at the end from a traditional fugue form in order to get a bigger ending. The last note in the fourth trumpet part is an F below the staff. To make this note possible, the player must push out their third slide to lower all notes using the third slide down one half step. All low Ds will then be fingered 2-3 and the final low F will be played with the fingering 1-2-3. If you are looking for something new for a recital or concert, this will do well. Every part has beautiful melodies which will keep the players interest.

National Anthem Of Canada

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet Octet
Composer- Lavallee/arr.Chidester
Length- 1:41
Difficulty- E
Range – Low F# to G just above staff
Endurance- 1+
Finger technique- 1+
Counting ability- 1+
Ensemble difficulty- 1

This is another national anthem and is called by the Canadians “O Canada” It is a lovely anthem and the reason I decided to add a few parts (twice as many as usual) was to make the simple, soft beginning contrast to a more powerful ending. Each part is written in a melodic fashion and because of better melodic lines, each part tends to cross over and under its neighbor. The first, second, third and forth parts play throughout but the others come in at staggered intervals. This is a versatile arrangement and can be performed by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 players. No matter how many players you have, it will sound good. Just keep adding players from the top down.

Clarke’s Fifth Technical Study for Cornet

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Instrumentation- Trumpet quartet
Composer- Clarke/arr.Chidester
Length- 2:15
Difficulty- D
Range – Low G to high C
Endurance- 2+
Finger technique- 3
Counting ability- 3
Ensemble difficulty- 3

This is the fifth technical study in the series and each seems to have a life all its own. When I begin an arrangement like this, I have no idea as to how it will begin or end. Each study seems to tell me what it wants. This one, like its predecessors, weaves back and forth among the four performers which makes it more interesting for everyone as well as take some of the pressure off one or two players. It was interesting to see how this arrangement eventually started sounding like the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets. I found that the natural crescendo grew until the last fourth of the piece and at the climax; I decided to end with a cascade of suspensions, continuing to a very soft and peaceful ending. For all you theory people, please notice the use of simple and extended augmentation of the original motive at the end. I like this number and I’m looking forward to sharing it with my ensemble at our next rehearsal.

This could be just the right music for your Renaissance dinner. First and second parts are tiring. The third and fourth parts are easy. The most concern will be the constant change of time signatures which is typical of this period.

Overture to William Tell

Composer- Rossini/arr.Chidester
Length- 3:03
Difficulty- D
Range – Low G to high C

This is a great concert piece and has had very good reception at all of our concerts. It’s a real show stopper if you can get the tempo up. Each part is equally difficult. There is some very fast tonguing in the first and second parts. The time rehearsing this piece is well worth it.
