It was requested that I include more concert material so I thought this would fill some of the requests. Brubeck’s unusual time features is the only concern and is also the reason that this number is so appealing. Once the 9/8 meter is established, the piece falls into place easily. The use of two antiphonal trumpet sections (3 each) adds interest as well as the additional strings and tympani. The piece has two climaxes and ends with a very dignified and final cadence which contrasts the busyness in the middle. If you have a serious concert in which you would like to include something very different and would like to get your audience excited, I think this is perfect.
